February: Amethyst

Amethyst

Your horoscope can often subscribe to plenty of personal characteristics. For some, it can provide insight as to their inner selves and subconscious needs and wants. For others, it’s a way to rationalize sending that risky text message, or buying a brand new couch.

However, with all the waxing poetic to be had in Capricorn moons and Leo suns, some would prefer a more concrete, tangible method of finding themselves.

Some would say Birthstones are the literal crystallization of the months in a year. Originating from the bible, In Exodus 28, Moses creates a special breastplate for Aaron, the High Priest of the Hebrews. Specifically, the breastplate was to contain twelve precious gemstones, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. These twelve stones were later assigned to the Zodiac, and as a result, became symbolic for all twelve months, respectively.

You could name your zodiac and horoscope, and the features that come with the assignment, but every birthstone possesses unique traits and personality themselves. Have you ever asked yourself if you’re as steadfast as a ruby? Or as richly reflective as a diamond? Let’s find out!

How similar are you to your birthstone?

Perhaps the original “deep purple”, Amethysts are known for their startling shades of violet, ranging in depth and darkness. As seen in the centerpiece of this 20.33 Carat Oval Amethyst and 1.40 Carat TW Diamond Halo Pendant in 14K White Gold, the colour is a result of radiation and heating levels at the time of formation. An Amethyst’s colour can be altered via artificial heating, but it’s a tricky process and can sometimes turn the stone a bright yellow, something resembling citrine, or produce a duo chrome hybrid known as Ametrine.

Amethyst has been assigned a number of properties throughout history. The Greeks believed it could prevent intoxication (the very name of the stone translating to “Not intoxicated”), whilst European soldiers believed it could heal the mind and body, often wearing Amethyst pieces into battle. It’s also associated with elements of Feng Shui, promoting peace and tranquility.

If Amethyst is your birthstone, people who know you may consider you gentle and soft spoken. However, you’ve grown through difficult learning experiences, emerging better for them with a new perspective on the importance of kindness and clarity. You prefer a quiet evening, but when you do go out, you would rather make it a well rounded soiree, a reservation and a plan, as opposed to something spontaneous. You are also often the Designated Driver.
